John Piper: Sexual Sin In Ministry

17 Sep

Wisdom from the heart of a true father!

rgh

“For the last twenty years thousands of men from across America struggling with sexual sin have come to our intensive counseling workshop. Over half were pastors and missionaries.

I wish our experience was unique.

Several years ago a seminary professor told me: “We no longer ask our entering students if they are struggling with pornography, we assume every student is struggling. The question we ask: ‘How serious is the struggle?’”

One missions agency told me that 80% of their applicants voluntarily indicate a struggle with pornography, resulting in staff shortages on the field.

Pornography is just one level of sin, a form of visual sex, or heart adultery. Physical adultery includes an affair, multiple affairs, prostitution, and homosexuality. Other sexual behaviors within the ministry are such heinous “unfruitful works of darkness . . . it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret” (Ephesians 5:11–12).

To face the crisis we must correctly understand the nature of the problem, ask God to search our own hearts, and be committed to restore each one caught in sexual sin “in a spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1).”

I pray my comment doesn’t seem too simplistic, but the revelation of the New Creation in Christ is hardly preached. Men, without this revelation, have little hope of getting away from ‘easily besetting sins’. Let us hear more of Paul’s Gospel in the ministry to these men who are struggling with sin. Paul had one attitude toward sin and the world: he was dead to it….and he said that he was always caused to triumph in Christ. First & Second John would be good to: ‘as he is so are we in this world’. I love men and they were made in the image of God. Teach them that they are new creatures in Christ, of the Second Adam and I believe they will break free of the lifestyle of the First Adam.

A follow up to my post: I speak from experience. My husband was addicted to pornography when we were saved. Right away we began to be taught the New Creation Realities. He learned that the real him, the spirit, had been born again and that the temptation to partake of pornography could now be resisted and overcome. He threw all his Playboy’s in the river and never bought another. He never picked up a magazine at a store when he was by himself or out of town somewhere where no one would know. He walked out what he learned…so we both know the keeping power of this revelation….when practiced.
